This week on GBW and ACDA Radio/ChoralNet host Stan Schmidt will deal with the Psalms of David and you will hear Psalm 51 and several compositions created out of that Psalm; Plus Psalm 77, I Cry Aloud commissioned by your host for his high school school choir in 1974 from Knut Nystedt. You will hear the recording of this work by the Kölner Kantorei led by Volker Hempfling from their CD Buch der Psalmen, Vertonungern des 20. Jahrhunderts. This recording is packed full of great choral composers like Distler, Poulenc, Nystedt, Ives, Penderecki, Vic Nees and Egil Hovland.
Other ensembles on stage this week include the Choir of St. Paul’s Cathedral; The Gloriae Dei Cantores; Scottish Festival Singers; The National Lutheran Choir; & The Choral Arts Ensemble of Minnesota. The voices of Kitka from Oakland California will offer a setting from Psalm 63 that comes from the Jewish Tradition with roots from Lithuania/Belarussia. Do some research on Kitka they are extraordinary in a subject that not all ensembles handle well.
The Final work is one of JS Bach’s very early cantatas BWV 106. No performances during Bach’s life time are recorded but the poignant treatment of the text and many ingenious compositional features of the music have made this perhaps, the most admired of Bach’s compositions before the date of 1708. But wait until you hear the ensemble Amici Voices on this CD just 8 singers, all from England who are assisted by an exceptional set of Instrumentalists.
This Bach music is on the Hyperion Label and was just released March 1, 2019. Hope you enjoyed your Convention and find some good listening in this week’s show.
