Music of Liszt Berlioz and Franz Schubert

This week on GBW and ACDA Radio/ChoralNet Host Stan Schmidt brings you an hour of music by three great composers who are well established to your ears.  Franz Liszt, Hector Berlioz and Franz Schubert.   The Music of Franz Liszt will wet your taste is the Motet “The Lord Preserves the Soul of His Saints” and “Die Seligkeiten” or “The Beatitudes” revised in 1859 for Solo Baritone, 7 part mixed choir and organ.  In this music the solo introduces the main topic, which is followed by richly harmonized responses from the choir in increasingly dramatic sequences.  These to are sung by the Debrecen Kodãly Chorus from Poland.  The second piece is “Pater Noster” performed by the Gloria Dei Cantores of Boston.   Then two spectacular pieces taken from a set of compositions by Hector Berlioz from a set called “Tristia (meaning Sad Things).  They were written  at different times but published in 1852.  The first is on a text by Thomas Moore…”The world is only a fleeting shadow, there is nothing true except Heaven.”  The third of the set is based on the final sections of Shakespeare’s Hamlet and is called a “Funeral March”  The Choir sings a single syllable “AH” in a manner of a military ceremony.  They are performed by SWR musicians from Germany……..The final piece is the Deutsche Messe by Franz Schubert from 1827.  Some folks know it as a Folk Mass.   Those of you who have performed the work will recognize it right away.  The performers are the Regensburger Cathedral Choir of men and boys with the Munich Radio Orchestra.   Come back for more great vocal and choral works.
