Father Forgive Them and Allan Bevan Passion

March 21, 2018 by ACDA Leave a Comment

The week on the ACDA Network Radio and ChoralNet,  Stan Schmidt, Host of Going Beyond Words offers you eight choral selections that carry Lenten and Passion implications.   You can engage in listening to seasonal music by Mendelssohn, Arvo Pärt, King John the IV of Portugal, Movement I from James MacMillian’s “Seven Last Words”,  Bach’s “Crucifixus” from the B Minor Mass and a special composition by Canadian Composer Allan Bevan.  On the program you will also find a Sarum Plainchant from the Peterhouse Partbooks, of England, Vol 5 sung by Blue Heron from Boston guided by Scott Metcalfe; “In Der Passionziet” from Op 79 by Mendelssohn, written to fit the German Lutheran Liturgy; The 2007 Composition “The Deer’s Cry” of Arvo Pärt, on a text by St. Patrick from the year 433;  Then Father Forgive them by James MacMillian.   The feature work of this broadcast offers  a live concert of “Nou Goth Soone Under Wod”  a metaphor for the entombment of Jesus with “Wood” referring to the material of the Cross.   This 28 minute work by Allan Bevan premiered on Good Friday March 2005, by Pro Coro Canada with the ensemble led by Dr. Richard Sparks.  The recording you will hear is from a Concert March 8, 2014 featuring a Narrator, Soprano soloist, and the University Singers and Concert Orchestra from the University of North Texas again with Dr. Sparks on the podium.  It is scored for eight part chorus in spots.   The work is published and is exceptional and worth the effort.  Questions can be directed to the composer or the conductor.
