This week Going Beyond Words on ACDA Radio and ChoralNet continues a Lenten approach. First from a new CD dealing with the topic of “Tenebrae – Music for Meditation and Contemplation” by German Male Ensemble Amarcord they offer “Da Pacem Domine” (Give Peace In our Time) by Johann Walter…….Next is one of several new selections that Judith Clurman and her Essential Voices USA are working on this year as single releases rather than a CD. In this case it is a piece by American Composer Howard Shore called “Peace” set to Lyrics by former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, statements she made about peace, hate and bitterness and how we must work on this topic to make it happen….Sound familiar. It is performed by members of the Essential Voice USA with students from St. Albans and National Cathedral School conducted by Ms. Clurman……The feature work is a Requiem by Armenian Composer Tigran Mansurian and is dedicated to victims of the Armenian Genocide, the organized killing of Armenians by the Ottoman Empire for the express purpose of putting an end to there collective existence…..These atrocities occurred during the years of 1915-18 of WWI. …The Los Angeles Times described Mansurian’s music as that “in which deep cultural pain is quieted through an eerily calm heart-wrenching beauty.” Please take the time to listen to this heart moving work. I am sure that after hearing it you will reflect on works by Dvorak, Brahms, Mozart and more. The composition was commissioned by the Munich Chamber Orchestra and the famed RIAS Kammerchor of Berlin…who are also the performers.
