This week Going Beyond Words returns to the season of Lent to present on ACDA Radio and ChoralNet seven different choral ensembles, six from the United States, one from England and one from Belgiam; plus a contralto that was one of the most recognizable voices singing spirituals, Marian Anderson with “I Want Jesus to Walk with Me”. You will hear two selections from the Masterful ensemble from Minneapolis whose mission is to “Reawaken The Ancient”….The Rose Ensemble. Then you can focus on the Stunning group singers Saraphic Fire of Atlanta offering a “Pie Jesu” from “The road from Hiroshima: A Requiem”, by Shawn Crouch. Then The Robert Shaw Festival Singers and the Choir of Palmer Memorial Episcopal Church from Houston help us recall two well-known Hymns. John Rutter’s Cambridge Singers feature two motets by Bairstow and Goss…….Of particular interest is the ensemble Il Gerdellino with a recording of Cantata BWV 46 by JS Bach…”Behold and see if there be any sorrow”, written for the 10th Sunday after Trinity in 1723. The scoring is unusual: In addition to the normal four-part Choir and Strings, it requires pairs of recorders and oboes da caccia and a slide trumpet. This 2012 release has the wonderful sound of original instruments. The choir is small and takes you back to what you might have heard at St. Tomas Church in Leipzig…….Closing this visit is a piece titled “Lord, you have now set your servant free” by Craig Philips featuring the Cathedral Choir and Schola from St. Philip’s in Atlanta, Georgia
