Atlanta Symphony Discriminates Against the Wrong Skin Color

August 20, 2012 by philip copeland Leave a Comment

Fascinating news from the Old South – from the Marietta Daily Journal:
Who knew that the most important qualification for performing onstage with The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra was not one’s musical expertise, but the color of one’s skin?

Who knew that the defining characteristic of its performances was not the sound it produces, but the complexions of those who grace its stage?

Indeed, who knew that those who run the Orchestra were so enslaved by political correctness?
What is all this about?  It seems the choruses are too white.
The pink slip came not because they couldn’t sing well enough and not because they couldn’t handle the material, but because of their complexions. Or in other words, because they were too pale. The student bodies at the two schools are each more than 75 percent white, a fact no doubt reflected in the makeup of the two choruses as well. The two public schools do not pick and choose who attends, but offer education to one and all. Their student bodies, for better or worse (definitely worse, in the eyes of the ASO), are reflective of the neighborhoods they serve.
The news has gone international, this from the UK:
‘We want the stages of the Atlanta Symphony, whether here, Verizon (Wireless Amphitheatre), or Chastain Park to reflect the diversity of Atlanta,’ ASO President Stanley Romanstein told WSBTV. The move has sparked criticism in Atlanta, with some local residents, including African-Americans, decrying it as discriminatory and unfair toward students at the two high schools. Romanstein said he was surprised by the reaction.

ACDA Online – Choral Loans Information

August 12, 2012 by philip copeland Leave a Comment

David Topping informed me about the current status of acdaonline.org – it is your first place to go to for your choral loans!  Bizarre, isn’t it?

We made the move to acda.org over the summer of 2008.  You can read about the short history of the acda.org sight right here.

If you have a website that lists the official ACDA website but you still connect to acdaonline.org, you might want to update your links!

The Chick-fil-A Choir Concert

August 6, 2012 by philip copeland Leave a Comment

This Chick-fil-A controversy was brutal, wasn’t it?

I stayed on the sidelines – I didn’t express an opinion or buy a sandwich or protest or anything.

I watched Facebook erupt with pictures of chicken sandwiches and thoughtful condemnations of those that bought them.  I’m sure you saw plenty of the same thing; none of us could avoid it.

As we attempt to learn the lessons of all this, I wonder this:  Would you come to my choir concert if you didn’t like my politics?

New Choral Journal Index

August 4, 2012 by philip copeland Leave a Comment

Everyone,

For years, Scott Dorsey has done an invaluable service for ACDA members by placing all of the articles of the Choral Journal into a manageable resource.  He based his project on Gordon Paine's monograph, a work that featured CJ organization for the first eighteen years of the journal.

The most recent result of the work was just released, an index of the Choral Journal for the last 34 years.  Check it out, and let Scott know how much you appreciate his ongoing work by replying to this blog post or sending him a quick note.

There is talk of turning the work into a digital creation – a version that links to PDF's of each article and eventually to a text-only version of the article.  If you are interested in becoming part of that massive undertaking, let me know by signing up on this form.
