The winner of the 2019 Illinois-ACDA Choral Composition Contest is William V. Malpede of Los Angeles, California, for his marvelous piece for SATB choir, “Duet”. In addition to a cash prize of $1,000, Mr. Malpede had his winning composition performed and recorded by all of the attendees at the IL-ACDA 2019 Summer Retreat this past June at Illinois State University.
Composer William V. Malpede holds a Graduate Certificate in Scoring for Motion Pictures and Television from the University of Southern California, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Business from Elmhurst College, Illinois, where he began writing arrangements and original compositions for the award-winning Elmhurst College Concert Choir, Jazz Band, and the vocal jazz ensemble, Late Night Blues. After touring as principle keyboardist with CATS, JOSEPH & THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT (starring Donny Osmond), and MUSIC OF THE NIGHT (starring Melissa Manchester and Betty Buckley), William settled in Los Angeles. His numerous and varied music production credits in film and television include RUNAWAY JURY, SPIDERMAN 3, BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, and RANGO. Original scores include ANGELS DON’T SLEEP HERE, GUYS ‘N DIVAS, and the award-winning, ANOTHER HARVEST MOON, (co-scored with Rick Garcia). Between 2012 and 2014, William scored and co-wrote original songs for the Disney Junior series, “QUIET IS,” and the featurette, LUCKY DUCK: A TUB TOY TALE. Honored in 2011 with the Coleman Award for Accomplishments in Music Business Entrepreneurship, Mr. Malpede was also awarded in 2015 with an Artist Residency Grant for composition from the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation, New Mexico. William’s choral works are published with Hal Leonard, Pavane, and MusicSpoke, have won awards with VocalEssence, and The Singers, and have been performed by The L.A. Choral Lab, the CalState Northridge Women’s Chorale, the Elmhurst College Concert Choir, the Glendale College Concert Singers, and the Hollywood United Methodist Church. William currently serves as lecturer of Music in Film at CalState University, Northridge, serves on the Board for the Academy of Scoring Arts, and continues to write for choral ensembles and for film, most recently providing orchestrations for the critically acclaimed documentaries, CRIES FROM SYRIA and BLEED OUT. 2019 – 2020 will see a new recording of his work by The L.A. Choral Lab, orchestrations for an international live production, SUPERHUMAN, and the original score for the film, STILL HERE.
