Rochester show choir takes indirect route to Greek tour

April 19, 2010 by Allen H Simon Leave a Comment

Greece Athena High School’s Show Choir will be able to cruise the Greek Isles after all, after ash from volcanic eruptions in Iceland disrupted travel plans here and around the world in the past few days.

Thousands of flights were canceled as a vast cloud of grit drifted over Europe. The Greece Athena students traveled from Toronto to Atlanta, then on to Athens, Greece, today, said Show Choir director Judith A. Ranaletta.

The cruise company had agreed to delay departure of the ship because so many passengers were affected by European flight cancellations and delays.

New Haven choir stuck in Europe, darn

April 19, 2010 by Allen H Simon Leave a Comment

New Haven, Connecticut (WTNH) – It may not sound like much of a problem to be stuck in Milan until the skies clear, but parents of the Branford High Concert Choir are beginning to get a little anxious.

It’s a trip of a lifetime that has turned into a wait of a lifetime on both sides of the Atlantic.

Thanks to the internet, video of the students enjoying time on a beach has been posted to YouTube.

The Branford High School students were due back in class on Tuesday. Originally the school was giving them Monday off to recover from jet lag.

Wisconsin choir sings only to benefit homeless

“This group is first about people, and we use music as a vehicle,” said Zahn. “We go out and help people.”

“Not to say that we don’t want to put on the best performances possible, but this is about raising funds to help others, and we happen to have fun doing it.”

The 70-plus member group does not receive payment for performances, but instead uses donations to help civic organizations.

Travelin’ Shoes performs in communities in both Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Choir Academy of Harlem slated for closing again

April 15, 2010 by Allen H Simon Leave a Comment

Two weeks after a judge said the city’s Department of Education could not close 19 schools as planned, one of the schools is back on the city’s agenda to be shuttered.

The new plan to close the school — which is actually not a school per se, but the high school grades of the Choir Academy of Harlem — is on the agenda for the Panel for Educational Policy meeting on April 20 in Brooklyn.

While this is the first of the 19 schools that the city is making a second attempt to close, it is also something of a unique case. That’s because the new proposal to close the Choir Academy’s high school was developed before the judge’s ruling.

World Voice Day – April 16

April 14, 2010 by Joanna Cazden Leave a Comment

Since 2002, April 16 has been recognized as World Voice Day, a chance to educate the public about the voice and voice care, and to celebrate the glories of the voice in cross-disciplinary events such as concerts, symposia, and private receptions. The idea began in Brazil and is now marked worldwide. Many voice clinics offer free screenings around this date. Look for events in your area; remind your singers about good vocal health; or at least take a colleague to a pat-on-the-back lunch!
