Warm Reception for New Work – Important Note

April 20, 2010 by Christopher Marshall Leave a Comment

In my message above regarding This Moroccan Sea I neglected to say that the free file download site I use features false ‘download here’ links. Please scroll down to the very bottom of the page where it says:

Thank you! And if anyone knows of a better free download site, I would be so grateful to know of of it!

Warm Reception for New Work

April 19, 2010 by Christopher Marshall Leave a Comment

The audiences at the recent world premiere performances of This Big Moroccan Sea in the San Francisco Bay Area were moved by fine singing and the poignant text at the heart of this work. It also received a very favourable critical response:
  • “….In constant movement, with ceaseless, practically subliminal activity, the voices all around the soloist parse his story into syllable and sound … a unique and moving experience.” (Ken Bullock, ForAllEvents, Thursday, March 25, 2010)
The choir was the San Francisco Choral Artists celebrating their 25th anniversary and their 15th year under inspired director Magen Solomon.
  • Here is a recording of their beautiful performance in Oakland (by kind permission of SFCA).

  • You may also like to view a perusal score.

  • Here is further information on the inspiration for this work.
In some respects the death of an illegal immigrant is an unlikely source for a musical text. However, I found the story very moving from the start and, as is often the case, immediately the musical ideas started to flow. This is not a description or an illustration; the horror of these events and the agony of the protagonist certainly do not require word painting to intensify the impact. Rather this an emotional reaction – a counterpoint to the story – perhaps also a glimpse of a human drama in a wider context.

If there is a place on your choir’s programme for This Big Moroccan Sea please ">contact me.

Thank you,
Christopher

Winter Solstice for women’s choir

April 9, 2010 by Paul Carey Leave a Comment

Roger Dean has recently released my piece “Winter Solstice” for women’ choir (mostly SSA) and harp or piano (catalog #15/2715R). The piece is in two movements and lasts about nine minutes. The piece was commissioned and premiered  by the Santa Fe Women’s Ensemble and sets gorgeous nature texts by two New Mexico poets.. The music reflects the wonderful imagery of the itexts with a lot of very sweet, flowing  phrases, is not difficult,  and has been a hit with singers and audiences in New Mexico and elsewhere. Contact me or Roger Dean if you would like a perusal score. The texts are great for any winter-themed (or seasons themed) concert and do not reference Christmas or other religious language. Visit  http://paulcarey.net/Music/Winter_Solstice.htm for more info.

Thanks, Paul

The Miserere for cello and choir by the Belgian composer Rudi Tas is a proven winner!

His Salve Regina for Violin, Soprano, 3 choir soloists and SSAATTBB-choir is the successor!
Of course you want to know more about this Salve Regina and other recent works by Rudi Tas.

Chinese Folk Song, Arr. Wayland Rogers

March 23, 2010 by Wayland Rogers Leave a Comment

Mo Li Hua, (Jasmine Flower) probably the most well-known of Chinese Folk Songs, has just been released in an arrangement by Wayland Rogers for SATB, flute and plucked string instrument. The dual-language text, in Mandarin and English, extols the beauty of the Jasmine Flower. The haunting melody, used intensively by Puccini in Turandot, in this version is restored to a more authentic style. Published by Boosey and Hawkes.
