Boston Area: Auditions for Cantilena, a Women’s Chorale

January 4, 2022 by Ellie Armsby Leave a Comment

Auditions are being scheduled now for soprano and alto singers. Auditions are by appointment and are held in the sanctuary of First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church (630 Massachusetts Ave.) in Arlington, MA. The audition takes approximately 15 minutes and consists of vocalization, pitch-matching, and sight-reading exercises. Singers are asked to prepare a song of their choice to demonstrate vocal quality, technique, and musicality. This song need not be a formal aria or art song: it can be a simple hymn or folksong. Please note that this song will be performed without accompaniment as there will be no accompanist at auditions. For more information visit: https://www.cantilena.org/audition

Cantilena, a women’s chorale, is an ensemble of approximately 40 singers, dedicated to performing music written for the treble voice. Our challenging and diverse repertoire spans the 15th to the 21st centuries and includes works in many different languages and musical forms. We strive to introduce both our members and our audience to works they are unlikely to encounter in other forums, with an emphasis on music composed specifically for women’s voices. The ensemble is directed by conductor, Elinor A. Armsby.

NYC: Ember auditions on January 4th!

January 2, 2022 by susanbaerscholaonhudson-org Leave a Comment

Auditions on January 4th!

Ember is an 8-part SATB ensemble for experienced singers who can read music. The ensemble stands out for its programming, which focuses on telling a meaningful story over the course of a full concert season. Artistic Director Deborah Simpkin King is well known for her new music advocacy and extensive collaboration with living composers. Ember holds auditions at the beginning of each concert cycle. Interested singers should reach out to us online at EmberArts.org/auditions. While the performance standard for membership is high, what knits Ember together is the experience of music as a living, breathing thing, connected to our daily lives, and filled with meaning. The Ember family always welcomes new members who share this passion for storytelling through song.

Auditions are held at Opera America and consist of vocalizing, singing a prepared aria, art song or show tune, and sight reading. Ember singers read music, and work with heightened ensemble discipline and flexibility to maximize expressive potential. Clear tone and excellent intonation are necessary for a successful audition. Ember is a mix of professional and experienced avocational singers, and we welcome auditions from both. We look forward to meeting you!
