USM Youth Ensemble – Southern Maine Children’s Chorus Auditions

December 28, 2015 by Nicolas Alberto Dosman Leave a Comment

Southern Maine Children’s Choir
conducted by Nicolás Alberto Dosman

Southern Maine Children’s Choir members, treble voices grades 4 and up, should have an interest in and love of singing, and be able to focus in a rehearsal lasting one hour and fifteen minutes. They are expected to be able to sing on pitch with a pleasant tone quality, maintain their own part when singing in harmony, and have a well developed tonal memory. Previous experience singing in a choir is preferred. Prospective members do not have to know how to read music in order to join.

Weekly rehearsals during the academic year are Wednesdays from 5:45 to 7 p.m (beginning January 20th).

Audition requirements: Candidate singers will be asked to sing a familiar song such as Happy  Birthday or America (My Country ‘Tis of Thee). The audition will also include singing back pitch and rhythm patterns and a range check. The audition will take approximately 5 to 10 minutes. Rehearsals will begin on January 20th. Please e-mail to sign up for an audition time and for more information.

Come sing Fauré, Mendelssohn, and Rutter with Sounds of Stow

December 28, 2015 by Christina Kennedy Leave a Comment

The Sounds of Stow Chorus under the direction of Barbara Jones welcomes all area singers to join in preparation for their 37th annual Winter Concert, Sunday March 20 at 3:00 p.m. in the auditorium of the Hale School.

We will perform music spanning 2 centuries: Mendelssohn’s beautiful and noble Lauda Sion, Fauré’s beloved Requiem, and a new piece by John Rutter, “Hymn to the Creator of Light” (from the just-published work, The Gift of Life: Six Canticles of Creation), which offers double chorus challenges that resolve in a richly harmonized, consoling, and affirming setting of a hymn to light. In addition, Schumann’s great Romantic piano concerto will be performed by renowned Boston pianist Manu Tokuno.

Rehearsals are Monday nights 7:30-9:30 at First Parish Church, 353 Great Road, Stow starting January 4.  Come try us out at our Open Rehearsals, Jan. 4 and 11! Open to all — no auditions are required. You will find a friendly, accomplished group of dedicated singers who gather to enjoy the challenges and rewards of singing great works by great composers, as well as interesting and often recently composed lesser known works.  The November and March performances are with full orchestra, with a more informal May program that varies from year to year.  For more information please visit soundsofstow.org or  call 978-707-9887.  We look forward to seeing — and hearing — you in the new year.

Sounds of Stow is supported in part by the Massachusetts Cultural Council as administered by Stow, Acton-Boxborough, Bolton and Hudson Cultural Councils.

December 27, 2015 by David Morales Leave a Comment

Certainly a pinnacle of Western art, Bach’s B Minor Mass displays the work of a genius in expressing faith that supersedes the boundaries of religion. The opportunity to learn and perform at the standards that define Cantare will make this a transformative event.
