I have agreed to conduct (for an interim time) a community choir here in Yangon, Myanmar (SE Asia), and have never conducted before. However, I am an experienced singer and play multiple instruments. The choir is quite skilled, and we need a nice “showcase” piece or set of pieces for a holiday concert. I’m interested in Missa Kenya, but the changing time signatures make my head spin! Being new to conducting I am nervous that I might be taking on too much, even though the choir could learn it, I’m not sure I can properly conduct it.
Also, we have very limited resources here – I probably can’t find a horn player so would need to substitute with another instrument.
Any recommendations for a “wow” piece that’s related to Christmas, doesn’t require a lot of instrumentation (could also be Acapella), that a new conductor could safely navigate? We have about 30 members – lots of basses and sopranos, not so many tenors and altos. That’s another challenge with the MIssa Kenya (or even Missa Criolla) – a tenor soloist would mean half or a third of my tenor section!
I’ve spent hours online searching for ideas, but am hoping tapping into this community will help narrow down my search. Thank you in advance for any advice!
