I am currently teaching Choral Music to 8th graders to prepare them for their upcoming 8th grade musical. Since the students have been with each other in a small school for many years, they are very talkative and chatty so I have them sitting boy-girl- boy -girl in order to help them focus. However, with this arrangement and seeing them only twice a week I am having trouble with the boys keeping the harmony parts. Does anyone have any tips to help 8th grade students especially boys keep harmony quickly and efficiently with only seeing them twice a week?
I would love to also hear if anyone has some strategies to managing a choral classroom where this is the student’s first first experience adapting to a ” singing and dancing only” classroom from having general music since Kindergarten so I wouldn’t have to seat them boy-girl. I also have a lot of students who scream-sing versus actually sing so I am looking for strategies for that as well. Thank you!
