Cathedral Schola Cantorum
The Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Richmond, VA, seeks a professional soprano (S2), alto (A2), tenor (T1), and bass (B2) for permanent positions, as well as substitute positions for all voice parts, in addition to cantor opportunities.
This opportunity may be combined with an Assistant for Worship position in the cathedral office. (Please inquire for further details.)
Substitute choristers must be available on Sunday mornings.
Choristers are engaged from September through June with Thursday night rehearsals, reoccurring Sunday Masses at both 9 and 11 a.m., occasional diocesan events, other events as scheduled, and concert opportunities.
Excellent pay for the region at:
• $20.00/hr for 2.5 hr rehearsal
• $30.00/hr for 2-hour or longer call (more for concerts and special engagements)
• $45.00/hr for 2-hour Mass call as a chorister with cantor responsibilities
o weddings and funerals are paid extra
The cathedral’s music program is gaining a reputation for excellence and welcomes those who wish to make music at a high level and are trained in the vocal arts, having earned at least a Bachelor’s in Music/Voice, or equivalent experience/skills. Exceptional sight-singing ability, flexibility in sound, and mastery of differing musical styles are equally important as dedication, commitment, and leadership skills.
Auditions are held by appointment and include a rendering of an early music aria of the applicant’s choice, sight-singing of Gregorian chant (in modern notation), and sight-singing of a renaissance Mass.
