Choral Auditions

Saturday, June 8, 2019 – Nassau & Suffolk
*Midweek Auditions May Be Available Upon Request
Good Day Colleagues,
I’m writing to share information about choral ensemble opportunities that your elementary, middle school and high school students may be interested in. The Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York (MYO) is an organization that consists of nine choirs. MYO is committed to fostering a community of talented young musicians from Long Island and providing them with an opportunity to rehearse and perform choral music at the highest level with recognized leaders in music education and performance.
MYO choral auditions will take place on Saturday, May 11 (Nassau and Suffolk ensembles), Saturday, June 8 (Nassau and Suffolk ensembles). We realize that these dates may pose conflicts for interested singers, so weeknight auditions may be available upon request by calling the MYO Office (516-365-6961).
MYO now has nine choirs for students entering grades 4-12 where we strive to accentuate the joy of singing and the development of the complete child through diverse musical experiences of the utmost quality. We aim to provide a stimulating and nurturing environment in which every singer can grow musically, intellectually and personally. It is our aspiration that the MYO experience will open doors to a life-long enjoyment of music for every child. Please find descriptions of each choir below:
NASSAU & SUFFOLK CHOIRS
The Nassau and Suffolk Treble Choirs are directed by Craig Knapp and are comprised of students in grades 4-6.
The Nassau Concert Choir, directed by Dr. Doreen Fryling, and the Suffolk Concert Choir, directed by Melanie Dominick, include unchanged voices in grades 7-8.
The Nassau Men’s Choir, directed by James Ludwig, is for boys with changing voices in grades 7-10.
The Suffolk Women’s Choir, directed by Brad Drinkwater, is a four-part SSAA women’s ensemble for singers in grades 9-10.
The Nassau Symphonic Choir, directed by Louise O’Hanlon, is a four-part women’s ensemble for high school vocalists.
The Suffolk Symphonic Choir, directed by Shoshana Hershkowitz, is a four-part SATB ensemble for high school vocalists with mixed voices.
The Nassau Chamber Chorale, directed by Edward Norris, is a select eight-part SSAATTBB ensemble for advanced singers in 11th and 12th grade who have completed a Level 6 NYSSMA Solo (or equivalent).
I am happy to announce that 2019-2020 will be the inaugural season for two new MYO choirs.
The MYO Suffolk Women’s Choir, led by Brad Drinkwater, is a four-part SSAA women’s ensemble for singers in grades 9-10. The choir performs advanced classical and contemporary choral music written for women’s voices. Through inspired and joyful singing, it is our goal for both singers and audience members to experience the full transformative power of choral music. Members should have experience singing in choirs and be able to demonstrate appropriate vocal technique and tone quality.
The MYO Nassau Men’s Choir, led by James Ludwig, is an ensemble open to boys with changing voices in grades 7-10. A major goal of this ensemble is to help adolescent boys develop literacy, musicianship, and technique throughout their voice change. This choir performs repertoire from myriad styles, chosen specifically to fit the developing voices of the young men in the ensemble.
MYO rehearsals take place in various schools on Long Island (Nassau and Suffolk County) and performances are held in premiere venues throughout Long Island and New York City. The MYO Children’s Choirs have grown rapidly over the years. I want to thank you all for your help in spreading the word to students and colleagues. Please feel free to share the attached flyers below with your students and their families.
