The Susquehanna Chorale, a nationally acclaimed adult chamber ensemble based in central Pennsylvania, has been awarded second place in the 2020 American Prize competition.
The American Prize recognizes and rewards the best performers, ensembles and composers in the United States. The Chorale tied for second place in the “Community Chorus” Division of this prestigious competition.
“We are honored to be the recipient of the American Prize, recognizing the artistic work of the Susquehanna Chorale,” said Conductor Linda L. Tedford. “This award is a testimony to the dedication and commitment of our singers and artistic staff to artistic excellence.”
Ms. Tedford founded the Susquehanna Chorale in 1981, and continues to serve as its Conductor and Artistic Director. Singers are chosen by audition for this 40-member volunteer ensemble, noted by patrons and critics alike for its precision blend of voices, professional-quality performances, and strong personal connection with audience members.
Thousands of qualified contestants from all 50 states have entered the American Prize competition since its founding in 2009. Performance entries are accepted from both community and professional groups, with no bias toward groups from large cities over small towns, or from well-known artists over lesser known ones. Entries are judged on overall artistic quality, musicality, rhythmic incisiveness, ensemble, tone quality, accuracy, intonation and knowledge of style.
“More than ever, we need to encourage our artists, for they are the soul of a great nation,” according to the American Prize organizers. “Artists have the power to bring joy and understanding, peace and contentment to others.”
The Chorale was awarded the “Community Chorus” prize based on select pieces from its professional recordings Sing Me to Heaven (2016) and Roots & Wings (2018).
The Chorale additionally received consideration for the American Prize in 2015.
