The innovative and critically acclaimed choral group, Inversion Ensemble, explores the four alchemical elements of Earth, Air, Fire and Water in its fourth season, Aether. September 28 and 29 Inversion Ensemble presents the concert Air—inspiration/wind, exploring how the ephemeral nature of this element represents the fleeting spirit of inspiration and change. Adding to Inversion Ensemble’s tally of over 57 world premières, the concert features brand new works written specially for Inversion Ensemble by local composers Adrienne Inglis and Robbie LaBanca. The concert also includes world première performances of works by Christopher Fludd (the winner of the second annual Emerging Composer Contest), by Alsu Nigmatullina (selected through Carlos Cordero’s Happy Composer project), and by Chicago composer Bethany Younge. Works by Trevor F. Shaw, Eric Whitacre, Isaac Lohdahl, Jeffrey M. Derus, Ola Gjeilo, and Carlos Cordero fill out the program. Inversion Ensemble welcomes guest conductor Joshua Chai for this concert. Artistic director Trevor Shaw will give a pre-concert talk and Q&A thirty minutes before each performance. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Travis Audubon Society.

Austin’s Inversion Ensemble is a choral collective made up of composers and singers formed to give voice to innovative choral works and to encourage the creation of new music. A great deal of our repertoire is written especially for Inversion Ensemble by composers who sing within the ranks of the ensemble. While many members of Inversion Ensemble perform, conduct, compose, study, and teach music full-time, the group also includes non-professional participants who are passionate about choral music and help to ensure it thrives as a modern art form.
