The Lure of the Sea
Join the Sounds of Stow Chorus and other area musicians on May 20 for our annual SpringFest Concert, a lighthearted look at charming music reflecting the eternal “Lure of the Sea” led by artistic director Barbara Jones.
Choral selections include rousing sea shanties, love songs, a lullaby, and others, where the sea figures literally or as a metaphor for other aspects of life. These range from simple arrangements of traditional songs used aboard ship to help sailors perform specific tasks, to beautifully crafted art songs, inspired by the eternally fascinating and varied ocean. The audience will be heartily encouraged to join the “crew” on some of the old maritime selections.
Instrumentalists will continue the seafaring theme with performances by Marc Lauritsen, jazz piano; Katherine Kleitz flute; Rick Layer, banjo; and Seamus Noonan, concertina.
This informal program is open to audiences of all ages and will be held at 4 pm Sunday, May 20 at the First Parish Church of Stow and Acton, 353 Great Road in Stow. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children. Sounds of Stow is supported in part by the Massachusetts Cultural Council as administered by the local cultural councils of Stow, Acton-Boxborough, Bolton, and Hudson.
