What’s the power of a folk song, rearranged for a choir and a modern age?
Last fall, we reached out to Anne Miller, the choral director at the Oakcrest School in Vienna, Virginia. We challenged her and her students to find a song from the Smithsonian Folkways Recordings catalog that spoke to them and create an original arrangement.
They chose Woody Guthrie’s anthemic “This Land Is Your Land” and Stephen Foster’s “Hard Times Come Again No More,” forming a medley that beautifully confronts the imperfect history of our nation.
