The Choir and Conductor – a new documentary on conductor Anne Tomlinson

April 7, 2022 by ACDA Leave a Comment

The documentary The Choir and Conductor by Oscar winner Freida Lee Mock, is out Tuesday, April 12 on VOD platforms. The film tells the story of visionary conductor Anne Tomlinson and her extraordinary impact on children through the world-renowned Los Angeles Children’s Chorus (LACC).

Billie Eilish, who appears in the film as an alumnus of the LACC, learned to sing starting at age eight when she, like thousands of choristers, was electrified by the charismatic Tomlinson who uses the power of choral singing to profoundly shape and transform the lives of children.

The film poses the critical question What happens when a nation invests in the artistic and musical life of its children? And what difference can one person make if given the opportunity?

View the trailer here.

The story is a celebration of music and its healing power as vital to children’s well-being during unsettling times and cutbacks in the arts. According to a report issued by Chorus America, “more than 1 in 5 households have at least one singing family member, making choral singing the most popular form of participation in the performing arts for both adults and children.” That’s close to 50 million Americans.

Says conductor Anne Tomlinson says, “It’s so important that our children not lose their voices and that our country not lose the voice of their children.”

For 30+ years, VocalEssence has held a series of Young People’s Concerts in conjunction with their annual WITNESS program, which uplifts the voices, stories, and accomplishments of the Black experience and the contributions to our shared heritage. Each year, they collaborate with artists and ensembles from the African diaspora for a shared concert experience and a year-long school program, highlighted by a roster of Teaching Artists from the Black community.

This year, because of the pandemic, they are not able to have students attend the concert in person. So, they decided to go nationwide and host a FREE livestreamed concert on Friday, March 4 at 10 am CST. They welcome Jason Max Ferdinand and the Aeolians of Oakwood University, who will join with the VocalEssence Singers Of This Age, an intentional diverse community youth choir, and Teaching Artists for this 55 minute concert experience created with students of all ages in mind.  The concert will also be available on demand on our website for students and teachers to watch later, in case they are not able to tune in to the livestream.

Ellen Gilson Voth, Winner of the 2022 ACDA Pearl Prize

February 9, 2022 by ACDA 1 Comment

From the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) Composition Initiatives Standing Committee:

Ellen Gilson Voth has been named winner of the 2022 ACDA Pearl Prize.

The ACDA Pearl Prize, named for the beauty yet simplicity of a pearl, seeks to foster new works for volunteer choirs (community or church choirs, as well as school choirs) that are eloquent yet simple, and create maximum impact with minimal difficulty. This focus plays an important role in the ACDA Composition Initiatives Committee’s broader mission to promote “the creation of quality new music for choruses of all sizes, ages, and abilities” and to serve the entire spectrum of ACDA member choruses.

The contest drew 133 applications from the U. S. and abroad. After several rounds of deliberation, our judges (Dr. Brandon Boyd, Susan LaBarr, Dr. Jamie Hillman, and Dr. Dan Forrest) are pleased to award the 2022 Pearl Prize ($3,000) to Dr. Ellen Gilson Voth for her work, Standing Tall.

Dr. Voth is in high demand as a conductor of college/university, professional and community choirs. An award-winning composer, her works are widely published and frequently commissioned and performed by choirs across the U.S. Voth credits her years of teaching experience and her performing experience as a keyboard artist and singer as important influences on her writing for the voice. Standing Tall is a four-minute work for 2-part treble choir and piano, commissioned by Dr. Jennifer Kane in memory of a recently deceased young friend of her family. Its text was written by Dr. Voth, mixed with affirming statements written by singers from Dr. Kane’s Handel and Haydn Society Youth Choruses. Regarding this collaboration, Dr. Voth says “it was our hope that Standing Tall would prompt vital conversation about the fresh start each day offers, and the inherent worth of every person. The need for eloquent, powerful, and accessible choral music that speaks to singers’ emotional well-being has never been greater. I am incredibly grateful to Dr. Kane and her singers, to the Pearl Prize judges, to the ACDA Composition Initiatives Committee, and to our shared village of conductors and composers who are all persevering and meeting this moment with tenacity and grace.”

The judges also awarded two runner-up prizes ($500 each) to Blake Mitchell for his work When Storms Arise and to Amy Bernon for her work The Soul of a Tree. Additionally, the judges expressed Honorable Mentions to Carlos Cordero for his work Pastores and to William Roberts for his work O keep me as the apple of your eye.

ACDA wishes to thank the choral industry publishers and partners who helped sponsor the Pearl Prize even during a time of economic downturn in the industry: Alfred Music, Beckenhorst Press, Finale, The John Ness Beck Foundation, Lorenz Publishing, and Santa Barbara Music Publishing. More details about the sponsors and the Pearl Prize can be found at https://acda.org/pearl-prize. The ACDA Composition Committee looks forward to additional expanded initiatives in the near future which will promote creation of quality new music for a variety of choruses.
