Your Singer MISSED The Concert….What Do We Do? – Use The 5 “E”S

December 19, 2021 by Adam Paltrowitz 1 Comment

Do you have singers who miss your concert?

– Do you have parents of singers who booked a family vacation that conflicts with your concert?

– Do you have singers with personal conflicts that prevent them from attending the concert?

– Do you have singers who get sick the night of the concert?

– Do you have singers who are a no-show at the concert?

How do you handle each situation?

Should these singers make up the concert? If so, how?

Should these singers be penalized for missing the concert?

There is an art to handling these difficult situations. I’ve spent more than two decades finding an appropriate way to handle each situation.

Here is my latest blog post:

A concert is a “summative assessment”. Participation in a concert reflects a major portion of this grade. If a student is absent from a test in another class, the understanding is that they will make up the test. For a concert, for whatever reason, they need to make up the grade. Since it is impossible, and impractical for us to reset the concert setting, I assign a two-page paper for the student to complete in lieu of concert attendance.
In a few cases, students managed to show up at the concert at the last minute. In all cases, I have been fully backed up by administration.
