Daniel Paulson

Daniel Paulson (b1977) holds a Bachelor of Music degree in voice performance from California State University, Sacramento, and has a Masters of Music Degree in Choral Conducing from California State University, Los Angeles.

Hailed as an “astute programmer” and a conductor who can “coax urbane performances from his singers,” Daniel has assisted as conductor for the California State University Men’s Chorus, Women’s Chorus, and Chamber Choir; he has conducted the Dixon Community Choir, the Orchestra of St. Cecilia, All Hollows Chorus, and served as assistant chorus master and section principle for the Choir of St. Cecilia.  Some of the highlights of his career include the creation of a children’s chorus program for the Gold River Discovery Center and conducting his choirs at American Choral Directors Association’s Chorus Festivals. Recently he has conducted at The Festival of New American Music in Sacramento, CA, The Old First Concert Series in San Francisco, CA, and the American Choral Directors Association National Convention in Chicago, IL.

Daniel has studied voice in the studios of Claudia Kitka (Cal State, Sacramento), Pamela Wentworth (San Francisco), and Desiree La Vertu (Los Angeles).  His extended education includes studying early music with the Elliot Z. Levine of the Western Wind Ensemble, and Simon Carrington of the Kings Singers.  He has been a featured soloist for Toccata Choir and Orchestra in Tahoe and Reno, NV, Schola Cantorum in Sacramento, CA, and the Davis Chorale in Davis, CA; has toured in Europe; and has performed at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, St. John’s Church in Montreal, Canada, as well as St. Mary’s Church, in Venice, Italy.  He has sung such roles as the Evangelist in Bach’s St. Matthews Passion, Obadiah in Mendelssohn’s Elijah, the Evangelist in Schütz’s Passion and the Dragon in John Rutter’s The Reluctant Dragon.  Other solo works include Mozart’sCoronation Mass, Handel’s Messiah & Chandos Anthems, Schubert Lieder, Dubois’ Seven Last Words of Christ, Bach Cantatas, as well as a local premiere of John Adams’ The Wound-Dresser.

As a commissioned composer, Daniel’s catalogue includes over twenty works written for strings, piano, and chorus.  His compositions have been performed by Vox Musica, Sacred Heart’s Schola Cantorum, the Choir of St. Cecilia, Dixon United Methodist Chamber Ensemble, St. Francis High School Girls Chorus, and professional musicians in and around the Sacramento region.  In a recent review his compositions have been claimed to have a “deeply ethereal feel”.  Several of his arrangements have been released on the compact disc, “Christmas Colours”.

Currently, he works in the Music Department at Amercian River College, is Director of Music Ministry at Dixon United Methodist Church, and is the Founder & Music Director for Vox Musica ( Mr. Paulson is a member of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), Music Educators National Conference (MENC), California Music Educators Association (CMEA), and Chorus America.
