Need some di Lasso! Help please :)

I have been working on a piece with my 9th grade girls and the arrangement I have is in English.  I like the flow and voice leading of this piece, arr. by JW Harris, but I want to sing it in Italian.  I have had them write in the Italian, but that will not satisfy the rules of my state contest coming up in a few weeks.  Does anyone have a suggestion on how to solve this problem?  It is "O Eyes of My Beloved", a.k.a. "O Occhi Manza Mia".  SSA.  It is in the key of G.

Any suggestions from the forum would be fabulous!  Thanks!

I think the best thing to do would be to contact your state office and let them know of your concerns. You are working with an arrangement of the original and the arranger did not choose to use the Italian in addition to the English singing translation. Their hands may be tied on this one - they may need to ask you to stick to the printed page. If you were working with an SATB choir I'd send you to CPDL (where you've most likely already been) where you could get the original, but that option won't help you here.

I would think the issue for the festival is copyright.  JW Harris holds a copyright on his arrangement of the tune, and I suppose that writing in the Italian constitutes a large enough change to the arranger's intent that you are violating his rights as copyright holder of the arrangement.  But copyright is the life of the creator plus 75 years, so Orlando di Lasso's original composition is in the public domain... by a long shot!  There should be no issue with you creating your own arrangement, which happens to be in the key of G, and happens to be scored SSA, writing in the Italian, and printing this out in Sibelius or Finale.  Last year I only had 3 guys in my chamber choir, so I wrote an SAB reduction of di Lasso's "El Grillo".  We sang it at festival without issue.  Now whether or not the judges want to take issue with not doing the original scoring, or marking us down for instrumentation is another issue.  But I felt I was making my choir succesful, teaching them important music, and not violating any copyright laws.

The arrangement for SSA is by Robinson. Perhaps it is similar to the version you have been using
