The National Children’s Chorus Launches New Era Moving Rehearsals and Showcases to Schoenberg Hall at the UCLA School of Music

Location: California, USA
Choir type: Children's and Youth Choirs
Voicing: Children

LOS ANGELES – America's leading youth choral institution, the National Children’s Chorus (NCC) recently launched a new era by moving the bi-coastal organization's Los Angeles rehearsals to Schoenberg Hall at the UCLA School of Music.

In addition to serving as a new rehearsal location for the NCC, the Hall will be the new venue for the NCC's fall and spring showcases featuring the youngest Prelude Level chorus up to the Scholars, the most advanced group. In addition to the annual showcases, the NCC's senior division also performs a full season of concerts at The Broad Stage in Santa Monica.  The NCC's East Coast students perform at The Church of St. Paul the Apostle in New York.  The 2013/14 concert season, entitled "Roots," begins in December.

According to NCC artistic director Luke McEndarfer, the move was prompted by the group's rapid expansion from one ensemble to seven with more than 300 students, but expedited by the demolition of the organization's headquarters at Saint Paul the Apostle School, recently raised as part of a capital campaign. The NCC executive team was searching for a larger Westside location that could accommodate the growing number of students and complex rehearsal requirements when Michael Dean, UCLA Music Department Chair, extended the invitation.

McEndarfer said, "We are truly honored to make Schoenberg Music Building the new rehearsal home of the National Children's Chorus in Los Angeles. More than the famous history surrounding the many illustrious musicians who have walked its halls, the new rehearsal rooms will provide our students with an elevated level of acoustical precision when refining their vocal technique."

He said the NCC will use the Hall's main orchestra room for all Senior Division repertoire practices, which offers a "sonically inspiring, professional environment to our most advanced vocal ensembles." Additionally, he said, the Kodály classes, music theory classes, and private voice instruction will be in classrooms with pianos and music staff boards, allowing instructors to most effectively demonstrate musical concepts to the students.  ”We are so grateful for the invitation to be here, and look forward to the artistic improvements we anticipate as a result."

Originally constructed in 1954, Schoenberg Hall is home to the prestigious UCLA School of Music, which offers world-class undergraduate and graduate programs to top-level music students from across the nation.  The large building, which contains offices, practice rooms, rehearsal rooms, and two theatres, features a top-ranked concert hall with a rich acoustic glass-paneled façade, and state-of-the-art interior, renovated in 2000. Schoenberg Hall was named after famed composer Arnold Schoenberg, UCLA music faculty member from 1936 to 1944.

"We are so happy to support the educational mission of the National Children's Chorus, certainly one of the top institutions training young singers nationwide," said Dean.  "It is our goal to work together in building aspiring musicians within the community, whether entering the NCC at the age of five, or graduating from UCLA with a DMA at the age of 27.  We are passionate about music education, and couldn't be more pleased with this planned partnership."
