poetry, adult choir and guitarDate: April 23, 2012 Views: 1707
I am planning a concert with my large adult community chorus in collaboration with a classical guitarist. I will be using arrangements with lyrics by famous poets. The choir will do a set of tunes, the guitarist will do a set, and I'd like to end with us doing a set together. I need some suggestions on arrangements that could lend themselves to guitar accompaniment. I have acquired a short list of SATB arrangements which were originally written for guitar, but am willing to adapt pieces as well. I can also program SSA or TTBB arrangements. Ideas?

I second David's recommendation of Jeffrey Van's piece. My university choir performed it last fall in a program of late-19th century American texts.

Romancero gitano by Castelnuovo-Tedesco is for guitar and
(small) chorus. The texts are by Garcia Lorca. Perhaps a sub-group
could do a few of the movements.

Castelnuovo-Tedesco's "Romancero Gitano", cycle of seven songs for choir and guitar on the poetry of Garcia Lorca. A great showpiece for the guitarist.

My setting of Edward Lear's "The Owl and the Pussycat" for SATB and guitar has been well-received by performers and audiences alike. It's published by Yelton Rhodes Music -- here's a link to the listing in their catalog, which includes an MP3.
All best!
