The Toronto Mendelssohn Choir’s vision is to make choral masterworks available, accessible, and inspirational to all listeners.  Through performances and educational programs, the TMC plays an important role in the choral community in Toronto, in Ontario and in North America.
For the 2011/12 season artistic director Noel Edison has chosen major symphonic works that haven’t been performed in Toronto for a number of years.  Performances will bring together the 150-voice Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, the Festival Orchestra (TMC’s longstanding professional orchestra) and noted soloists.  Highlights include A Night of Brahms featuring Ein Deutsches Requiem in the fall and Walton’s Belshazzar’s Feast in the spring, both at Koerner Hall.  Popular annual traditions complete  the season:  Festival of Carols at Yorkminster Park Baptist Church, this year welcoming Richard Ouzounian as narrator; Handel’s Messiah with the TSO; and Sacred Music for a Sacred Space on Good Friday at St. Paul’s Basilica.  The TMC will also perform regularly with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, including the June 2012 performances of Mahler’s massive Symphony #8, known as “The Symphony of a Thousand.”  The full TMC concert season is outlined below.
Under the direction of Grammy-nominated conductor Noel Edison, the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir is known for the beauty of its sound and clarity of expression.  The Choir combines a professional core of 20 voices of the Elora Festival Singers with auditioned amateurs and young musicians from the TMC’s Apprentice program and the Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory.
In addition to world-class performances of choral masterpieces, the TMC has extensive outreach and education programs to develop emerging conductors and singers and strengthen the Canadian choral community.
The Choir created a new Associate Conductor position in 2011. This position will provide talented young choral conductors with coaching, training and mentoring from Canada's pre-eminent choral organization, while providing the TMC and its Artistic Director with high-calibre conducting support.
In 2010 the TMC also launched its Choral Conductors’ Symposium, a week-long workshop for five emerging conductors led by Noel Edison.  The second annual Symposium will take place in January 2012 and will conclude with a free concert at Yorkminster Park Baptist Church on Saturday, January 28.  The five Symposium conductors will lead the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir and the Elora Festival Singers through an engaging concert spanning diverse choral repertoire.
The TMC is also in its third year with the Apprentice Program which supports the choral development of young singers aged 17 to 22.  Apprentice singers add an important dimension to the blended and dynamic sound of the Choir.
Singsation Saturdays is a popular outreach program that brings together conductors and amateur singers from across the Toronto region.  This series of five choral workshops covers a diverse range of repertoire and features a new guest conductor for each workshop.  Singsation Saturdays will take place at Yorkminster Park Baptist Church on October 15 and November 19, 2011 and January 14, February 25, and March 31, 2012.  Guest conductors and repertoire will be announced in June.
Details for all TMC concerts and programs can be found on the TMC’s website:  This informative site includes concert and workshop listings, online box office, podcasts with conductor Noel Edison and music broadcaster Rick Phillips, and concert program notes.
The complete TMC season includes a subscription series, guest appearances and the free Choral Conductors’ Symposium Concert.
