Boy, this conductor sucks!
by Philip L. Copeland (November 20, 2008 2:30 AM)

Today's blog post title answers the following question:

What is the most common gripe among orchestra players?

Sticks and Drones explains more in this post (previewed here):

I have heard it from several angles, including from inside the orchestra (I spent many years playing Orchestral Keyboards, probably the performance opportunity I miss most with having a conducting career) and from when I'm on the podium (word of advice to young conductors--just because you hear something that doesn't mean you have to listen to it; you are out there to do job and you have to have a thick skin).

--

Just try practicing your craft when you're only allowed to touch your instrument once a month for two hours. Oh, and did I mention that your repertoire for that practice session will be The Disney Christmas Medley?

Help us bring choral musicians together:

A letter from James D. Feiszli

November 19, 2008

Dear Friends,

You are invited to nominate candidates for service on the ChoralNet Board of Directors.

ChoralNet, Inc. is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization whose purpose is to be a central portal to online resources and communications for the global choral community. ChoralNet is governed by a Board of Directors who are either appointed by one of the three founding Partners (IFCM, ACDA, Chorus America) or elected by a majority vote of the current Board. The constitution calls for representation from each of the three classes of ChoralNet supporters: Partners (4 directors), Patrons (2 directors) and Donors (1 Director). The Board usually also elects at least one at-large Director to form a Board of eight members.

  • Partners are those entities that contribute at least $2500.00 annually to ChoralNet
  • Patrons are those that contribute at least $250.00 annually to ChoralNet.
  • Donors are those that contribute at least $50.00 annually to ChoralNet.
Board members are active in the governance and operation of ChoralNet and are chosen for their willingness to contribute their time and energy to ChoralNet. Most ChoralNet Directors are active in at least one or more choral organizations.Ê They go to conferences and conventions and are known in those associations. The ChoralNet Board holds 3-4 formal online or teleconference meetings and one face-to-face meeting annually. There is frequent communication between directors and the larger ChoralNet community of volunteers (moderators, podcast developers, translators, website manager) as well as the ChoralNet Manager.

The ChoralNet Board is a working, unpaid, volunteer board Most members have assigned duties and head a major effort on behalf of ChoralNet, whether it be an officer position or chairing a task force for oversight or implementation. Directors are expected to support ChoralNet financially. Directors need not be technically savvy nor historically knowledgeable regarding the inner workings of ChoralNet. The single most important factor is the willingness to serve.

I hope that you will thoughtfully consider offering your services or nominating a colleague who you believe would be of service to the choral profession through ChoralNet Board membership. Take a few moments to tell us what the candidate might be able to offer ChoralNet and send it to me in whatever format suits you. The Board will be meeting in a couple of weeks to re-create itself for 2009.

Sincerely,

Dr. James D. Feiszli, Director of Music
