Interim Choir Associate
Date: July 11, 2014
Location: New York, New York, USA
Park Avenue Christian Church (Disciples of Christ/United Church of Christ) in New York City seeks an Interim Choir Associate beginning in September 2014 to help us continue to celebrate “the divinity of difference.” The Interim Choir Associate will be a person of faith called to nurture PACC’s two choirs comprised of volunteer and professional musicians under the supervision of the Interim Minister of Music.
Music plays a vital role in our congregation's worship life, helping us to offer heartfelt praise and prayer through hymns, responses, Psalm singing, choral music, instrumental music and more. Our music ministry embraces not only the great classics of the Western music tradition, but also gospel, jazz, world music, and contemporary classical expressions. We welcome the gifts of children, students, volunteers and professional musicians and trust that our work together will glorify God, build a community of respect and love, and help each of us to realize our greatest potential.
The Interim Choir Associate will, in consultation with the Interim Minister of Music, lead rehearsals for PACC’s Sanctuary Choir and Gospel Choir. The Sanctuary Choir, currently comprised of four professional singers and additional volunteers from the congregation, sings in Sunday morning worship twice a month and rehearses bimonthly on Tuesday evenings. The Gospel Choir is comprised of volunteers and three paid section leaders, and rehearses weekly on Thursday evenings. The Gospel Choir also sings in Sunday worship once per month.
The Interim Choir Associate will also assist with song leading on the three to four Sundays per month when she/he is conducting one of the two choirs. The Associate will have one Sunday off per month, and the full schedule of rehearsals and services for the 2014-15 year will be provided by August 31, 2014. Salary range for the position will be between $20,000-$24,000.
A minimum of two years’ experience in directing volunteer and professional choral ensembles is preferred, as is a degree in music or music education. Proficient keyboard skills (i.e., ability to lead rehearsals from the piano in instances when the Interim Minister of Music is absent) is also required. As the position involves ministry within a diverse and progressive community of faith, we highly value strong interpersonal skills, ability to engage with adults and children from varied racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, and a poised, professional attitude in all circumstances.
Additional professional and personal qualities desired include:
• Biblical literacy and knowledge of liturgical worship.
• Experience and skills as a song leader and/or worship leader.
• A joyful and authentic faith commitment that expresses itself in his/her music.
• Proficiency with music notation software.
• Openness to constructive critique and feedback.
• Flexibility and a willingness to try new approaches.
More information about PACC’s music program is available at the church’s website,
To apply, submit a letter of intent, a CV/resumé, list of three references, and any applicable recordings or video excerpts of performances showcasing conducting and/or singing skills.
