Mount Holyoke College Glee Club and Chamber Singers Return from Outreach/Concert Tour to New Orleans

Location: Virginia, USA
Choir type: College and University Choirs
On their six day concert tour of New Orleans, the Mount Holyoke College Glee Club explored, rebuilt, and performed!
The Mount Holyoke College Glee Club and Chamber Singers performed concerts at Xavier University, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, and even in the home of a Mount Holyoke College Alumna, where the students shared an evening of friendship and music with the Louisiana Alumnae Club for MHC alumnae and friends.  In addition to formal concerts, the Glee Club had several outreach activities and musical exchanges with organizations such as Make Music New Orleans, Rebuilding Together New Orleans, and Xavier University, where the group learned about Creole music and Spirituals with Givonna Joseph of Opera Creole and John Ware of Xavier University.
Rebuilding Together New Orleans, which is the largest non-profit home rehabilitation organization in New Orleans, is working on laying the foundation for an inclusive community that supports wounded US soldiers returning from abroad.  The project – called Bastion – is being built on land that has been vacant since Hurricane Katrina, which swept through New Orleans in 2005.  The Mount Holyoke College students helped with landscaping, site clearing, and debris removal, but perhaps the most important part of the experience was when the choral ensembles sang for a Rebuilding Together New Orleans “Welcome Home Ceremony," in which the singers welcomed residents into their newly-built homes.
Another highlight of the tour was a jazz dinner cruise on the Mississippi River where the students had time to explore the grand vessel, enjoy the music, and take in the views from the ship!
