Conferring Emeritus Status
Date: April 25, 2014
I would be grateful for recommendations or information on the usual protocol for conferring emeritus status for a beloved conductor who is concluding an extended, highly successful tenure as founding artistic director of a professional choral ensemble.
Is permission usually sought from the person to be so honored? Seems prudent. We hope to announce the new title at a celebratory event; the element of surprise would be effective only if the new title would be welcomed!
I expect that our board would have to endorse/approve the new title, perhaps in the form of a resolution. Thoughts?
I found nothing in the ChoralNet archive, and some general research turned up plenty of information related to professors emeriti, but nothing that answers my questions.
