Glory Be! One Voice Chorus (Richmond, VA) Debuts Greer World Premiere

Location: Virginia, USA
Choir type: Community Choirs
Voicing: Mixed
Richmond, VA – On March 15, 2014, Richmond’s One Voice Chorus will perform the world
premiere of a work by Richmond local composer Bryan Greer in its concert, “Glory Be! Contemporary
Spirituals for a Contemporary World.” The program will feature two of Greer’s arrangements, as well
as the spiritual and gospel arrangements of Moses Hogan, Rosephanye Powell, Richard Smallwood, and
Mack Wilberg, among others.
Greer says, “The traditional spiritual I Want Jesus to Walk with Me is a traditional slave song that
brought hope in the midst of the tedious work forced upon them. My treatment attempts to take the
listener on a journey to follow the musical contour of a wail, getting higher and covering the distance of
an octave before falling back to the lowest note in half the time it took to reach the top. Before the final
verse, the piano’s accented chords sound almost like bells to usher in the final verse asking Jesus to walk
with us as we are dying.”
One Voice Artistic Director Lynn Atkins adds, “This concert will introduce our audience to a fresh
take on this traditional music that is at the heart of our mission. While audience members may recognize
some of the words to several of the selections, they may be surprised by the nuances of these choral
arrangements.” The concert will include two audience sing-alongs and a performance by the Chorus’
auditioned Ensemble, and will be presented at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 815 East Grace Street,
Richmond, at 7 p.m. Bill Cooper, Vice President, Office of Diversity & Inclusion, Federal Reserve Bank of
Richmond, will facilitate a thought-provoking conversation, Harmony in Living Black & White, beginning
at 6 p.m.
An admission donation of $15 is requested for adults; children 12 and younger are free. Tickets
are currently available from members of One Voice Chorus, and donations will be accepted at the
performance. Group discounts are available. For more information, visit or
call 804-231-0324.
